The Dell Inspiron M5010 is based on AMD's triple-core Phenom II N850 CPU and it's one of the great all-round 15.6in laptops on the Australian market. You can use it for office work, multimedia tasks and even gaming (although not for graphics-intensive first-person shooters). It's a good unit for students looking for something to take back to school, yet even small business users should find it appealing for everyday work. We just wish it wasn't so glossy and reflective.

Introducing the Dell Inspiron M501R AMD triple-core laptop

For RM 2100, the Dell Inspiron M501R is a 15in laptop that's packed with useful features and lots of processing power for multitasking. It runs a 2.2GHz AMD Phenom II N850 triple-core CPU, has 4GB of RAM, a 500GB hard drive as well as AMD Mobility Radeon 550v graphics. It can be used for pretty much everything except hardcore gaming and it's suitable for students, home users, and even small business users who want something a little fancier than a boring old corporate machine.

Design and features

The design of the Inspiron M501R is plain and all of its ports are well spaced around the edges of the chassis. You get HDMI, VGA, USB 2.0 (four), 100Mbps Ethernet, and eSATA ports. There is also an SD card reader and a built-in DVD burner. The palm rest and the touchpad both have plenty of space afforded to them and the keyboard has full-sized keys that are easy to hit. You won't find any shortcut buttons above the keyboard, but the F-keys have their functions reversed. This means you won't have to first press the Fn key to change the screen brightness or to use the media and volume controls.
Its finish is quite glossy and its screen is reflective, and both of these traits can make the Inspiron M501R a little uncomfortable to use. The palm rest sometimes feels a little sticky (especially on hot days) and if you use the notebook outdoors, you'll soon get sick of staring at your reflection in the screen. We made the same observations when reviewing the quad-core Inspiron M501R notebook. That said, the triple-core M501R feels well made and you can pick it up from either corner without it making any creaking noises. It does get a little warm when it's under a full processing load, which will make it uncomfortable to use on your lap. In saying that, you probably won't be using it on your lap while it's undertaking rendering tasks or any other tasks that maximise CPU usage.

Performance

The triple-core Inspiron M501R actually performed better than the quad-core M501R in almost all of our tests thanks to the triple-core CPU's faster clock speed of 2.2GHz compared to 1.6GHz for the quad-core. It recorded a time of 1min 7sec in the Blender 3D rendering test, which is 1sec faster than the quad-core M501R, and it recorded a time of 1min 32sec in the iTunes MP3 encoding test, which is 24sec better than the quad-core M501R. The quad-core M501R proved to have faster hard disk performance than the triple-core M501R though, notching up 40 megabytes per second (MBps) compared to 30.28MBps. The triple-core M501R was better in 3DMark06, scoring 5896 compared to 5874. The triple-core system also outdid the quad-core system in our DVD transcoding test, converting our DVD to a 1.5GB Xvid video in 1hr 26min, which is 7min quicker than the quad-core system.
Basically, all these numbers mean that the triple-core Dell Inspiron M501R is a useful all-round computer. It can be used not only for office work, but also for tough multimedia tasks such as transcoding video for your iPhone or editing video to upload to YouTube. If you plug in a USB-based digital TV tuner, you could even use it as a Media Centre and PVR (personal video recorder).

Battery life

The battery life of the triple-core Inspiron M501R isn't great — it lasted only 1hr 31min in our rundown test, in which we disable power management, maximise the screen brightness, enable Wi-Fi and loop an Xvid-encoded video. This is one minute less than the quad-core Inspiron M501R. If you enable a power management scheme and use low screen brightness, you should get around two hours of it, but if you use the laptop outdoors while on battery power, then you'll need to have the screen at full brightness anyway if you want to minimise the annoyance of reflections.

Conclusion

Overall, the triple-core Dell Inspiron M501R is a great laptop worthy of consideration if you want a RM 2100 system that can do just about everything. It even outshone the quad-core version of this laptop in the majority of our tests thanks to its slightly faster clock speed of 2.2GHz compared to the 1.6GHz speed of the quad-core, although the quad-core version would come into its own under heavier multitasking loads.

The Aspire One D260 is the latest addition and what it lacks in storage it compensates for with all-day battery power.

In the netbook market in general, the compact chassis is ideal for regular travel and use around the home. Weighing 1.2kg and with a depth of just 30mm, the slim design lets it slip easily into even the smallest hand luggage.

Powered by a slim 6-cell battery, battery life is fantastic without adding any undue bulk to the chassis. Running for nearly nine hours under the most demanding use, it delivers enough power to keep you working throughout the day.

Despite the slim dimensions, a decent sized keyboard is in place and all the keys are large enough to comfortably type at speed. The board is firmly fixed to the chassis, with no flex on show, and all keys respond smoothly and accurately.

More surprisingly, the Acer's touchpad is equally well sized and comfortable to use. While many netbooks feature tiny pads that can be fiddly to use, the Acer's wide touchpad makes it easy to navigate onscreen.

Where all netbooks are alike is the limited performance they provide. Powered by an Intel Atom processor – a chip designed solely for compact, low-cost devices – the Acer only suits the most basic of use, such as word processing, browsing the internet and sending emails.

Graphics are equally limited and are intended for multimedia consumption, rather than creation. Video plays back smoothly, with even high-definition 1080p content handled with ease, but don't expect the power of a similarly priced full-sized laptop.

Bright screen

That's not to say that the Acer is no good for entertainment use, however, as the glossy 10.1-inch screen is suitably bright, with vibrant colours and deep blacks. This makes it great for viewing photos and videos and a perfect choice for kids to use.

Where the Acer falls slightly short of its rivals is its storage. While the Asus Eee PC Seashell 1015PE and Dell Inspiron Mini 1018 are fitted with 250GB hard drives, the Acer's 160GB drive seems a bit stingy in comparison.

As with most netbooks, there is no built-in optical drive for accessing CDs or DVDs.

With so little to differentiate most netbooks currently on sale, it takes a unique feature or two to really stand out. The fantastic battery life and great usability of the Aspire One D260 are what raise this machine above its similarly specified rivals. A really terrific netbook at a great price.

Flash Player 10.2 Boosts Video with Less CPU Power

Better video with less CPU power is promised by Adobe's Flash Player 10.2, which uses a hardware-acceleration technology called Stage Video. Adobe said Stage Video playback is 34 times more efficient and needs only one to 15 percent CPU usage for greater battery life. Flash Player 10.2 also supports multiple displays and better text readability.
Adobe Systems has released version 10.2 of its Flash Player, which introduces a hardware Relevant Products/Services-accelerated video Relevant Products/Services technology called Stage Video. The company said Stage Video offers higher-quality video "while using dramatically less processing power Relevant Products/Services, giving users a better experience, greater performance, and longer battery Relevant Products/Services life."

In fact, Adobe said, when tested on supported systems, Stage Video was 34 times more efficient than the previous video playback on Flash. Supported systems include Windows 7, Vista and XP; Windows Server 2003 and 2008; Mac OS X 10.4 through 10.6; three versions of Linux; and Solaris 10.

'Slick HD Home Theaters'

Adobe said 1080p HD video can now be played back with only one to 15 percent CPU usage on a Mac or Windows machine using various browsers. In its tests, the company said, Flash Player 10.2 was used with Stage Video on a two-year-old Mac Mini and a low-power GPU-enabled Windows netbook, and "smooth full HD 1080p video" used less than eight percent of the CPU. More current or more powerful computers can be expected to use less.

"Many millions of additional PCs, from netbooks to desktops, can now become slick HD home theaters on the web," the company said.

Flash Player 10.1 has hardware-accelerated decoding for H.264, on which Stage Video builds. But the impact Adobe is describing may take some time to ripple through the web, as web sites and content providers need to update their site video players so Stage Video can be presented. Video libraries don't need updating.

The Flash technology is widespread. According to Adobe, Flash content reaches between 98 and 99 percent of all Internet users. Player 10.1 has an 87.4 percent penetration in the U.S. and Canada, and 86.2 percent in Europe, plus more than 80 percent in other markets. The company said 80 percent penetration is the tipping point, when developers start to use features in a new version.

Other New Features

While Stage Video is the headliner for 10.2, there are several other new features as well. There's multiple display full screen support, so that, for instance, a user can watch Flash video on one screen and use a Flash-based tool or game on another.

There's also support for custom native mouse cursors for creating static and animated cursors, sub-pixel text rendering enhancements to enhance text readability in Flash, and support for the GPU rendering technology in Microsoft Relevant Products/Services's new Internet Explorer 9 browser.

Jeffrey Hammond, an analyst with industry research firm Forrester, said Stage Video's impact could be big "as we see new tablets and other ARM-based devices with Nvidia chipsets" lend hardware acceleration to high-quality video playback.

The result, he said, will be "much longer battery life" while playing HD video, and a boon for long-distance travelers who want to watch video without continually swapping batteries or recharging.

In the struggle against Apple, which has disparaged Flash as being a glutton for memory and power, Hammond said Stage Video will show that the technology runs "pretty efficiently."

Samsung Intros NVIDIA Tegra 2 based Galaxy Tab 10.1 & New Superphone, Galaxy S II Debuts

Including Apple, we've covered six major players in the high end smartphone SoC space: Apple, Intel, NVIDIA, TI, Samsung and Qualcomm. Not all of these six will survive in the long run.
We'll see acquisitions, poor execution and architectural inefficiency all contribute to the whittling down of this list. The process will take a while, but in the long run I don't believe the market will be able to support this many players in the SoC space. Today I believe we may have seen the first sign of weakness from one of the players.

Samsung's Galaxy S line of smartphones and the Galaxy Tab both used Samsung's own Hummingbird SoC. At its press conference before Mobile World Congress Samsung announced the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and a new Samsung superphone will both use NVIDIA's Tegra 2 SoC instead of something of Samsung's own creation.

All isn't lost for the Samsung SoC group as it also announced that the forthcoming Galaxy S 2 will use Samsung's recently announced Orion SoC.

I can't stress how big of a win this is for NVIDIA. To have the mobile arm of one of your competitors use a Tegra 2 in a tablet and phone is huge. While LG was first out the gate, Motorola brought the polish and name NVIDIA needed in a partner. Samsung will likely take that to the next level.

The move also makes sense for Samsung. By going with NVIDIA, Samsung gets access to the reference platform for Honeycomb and will likely get to market sooner than if it had waited.

The Galaxy S II

Samsung also announced the Galaxy S II based on Samsung's own SoC design.

The Galaxy S II has a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display and is only 8.49mm thin. The phone continues the Galaxy S tradition of being incredibly lightweight at 116g.

The Galaxy S II has a 1650 mAh battery and Samsung is promising improved standby and talk time vs. the original Galaxy S.

The phone also supports NFC, HSPA+ 21.1 Mbps, Bluetooth 3.0, 1080p full HD recording/playing, an 8MP rear facing camera with LED flash and WiFi Direct for wireless syncing. The Galaxy S II will run Android 2.3.

Bertempur dengan iblis dan jin ayah pin

Pada tahun 2005, terdapat satu kumpulan ajaran sesat yang bergelar “Kerajaan Langit” atau “Sky Kingdom” yang bertapak di Besut, Terengganu. Pengasas kepada Kerajaan Langit ini iaitu Arifin Mohamad atau lebih dikenali sebagai Ayah Pin. Kumpulan ini telah disenaraikan sebagai kumpulan ajaran agama sesat oleh Kerajaan Malaysia. Ajaran agama sesat ini berkampung di Kampung Batu 13, Hulu Besut, Terengganu.


Ayah Pin menyifatkan dirinya sebagai “Tuhan” kepada segala agama. Ayah Pin berjaya memperalatkan dan mempengaruhi pelbagai lapisan masyarakat, agama dan status penduduk di negara ini untuk menyertai ajaran agama sesat yang disebarkannya. Dia membangunkan kawasan Kerajaan Langit dengan beberapa struktur besar untuk melambangkan kuasa tuhan yang diamanahkan kepada dirinya untuk melindungi dan mamayungi umat manusia.


Antara bangunan dan struktur yang dibina di kawasan seluas 6 ekar di Hulu Besut termasuk cerek gergasi, pasu, payung seperti Grand Stand F1, bulan sabit, telaga, rumah bulat, rumah nasyid, dewan perhimpunan, wakaf, replica kapal bahtera nabi noh, jambatan, sebuah makam Mohamad Ya dan sebagainya. Ada yang memaklumkan kos pembinaan struktur dan bangunan ini melebehi RM5 juta. Mengikut lapuran, Kerajaan Langit telah bertapak di tempat ini sejak pertengahan tahun 1980han tetapi pada hakikatnya kumpulan ini wujud di negara ini sejak tahun 1970han lagi. Anggaran jumlah pengikut-pengikut ajaran sesat ini ditaksirkan sebanyak 23 ribu pengikut dari dalam dan luar negara.


Selepas bertahun-tahun bergiat dengan ajarannya di Malaysia, akhirnya ajaran yang memesongkan orang ramai itu telah dihidu oleh pihak berkuasa. Akhirnya pengikut-pengikut Ayah Pin telah ditahan dan disoal siasat serta didakwa di makhamah. Ayah Pin telah menghilangkan diri dari pihak berkuasa sehingga hari ini dan ada yang mengatakan dia bersembunyi di Selatan Thailand. Kawasan Kerajan Langit di Besut itu turut dimusnahkan pada bulan Ogos 2005. Di sini saya ingin menceritakan penglibatan saya dalam permusnahan kawasan Kerajaan Langit di Besut itu.


Terlebih dehulu saya ingin menceritakan sejarah Perubatan Syifa Al-Hidayah di negeri Terengganu. Sejak tahun 2003, saya telah mula mengunjungi ke Kuala Terengganu sekali sebulan untuk mengubat pesakit-pesakit dari Pantai Timur. Sahabat saya Ustdz Mohd Shukri Ali yang bertugas sebagai Pegawai Ugama di Istana Terengganu adalah orang yang bertanggung-jawab membawa saya ke Terengganu.


Dahulu semasa saya mula-mula berubat di Kuala Terengganu, saya berubat di kediaman Ustadz Mohd Shukri yang pada masa itu menetap di kuarters istana berhampiran dengan pantai Batu Buruk. Pada suatu pagi Sabtu pada penghujung bulan July 2005, Mufti Terengganu kebetulan dia sahabat kepada Ustadz Mohd Shukri, berjumpa saya di kediaman Ustadz Shukri. Dia mohon pertolongan dari saya agar dapat membersihkan benda-benda ghaib yang menjaga tempat kawasan Kerajaan Langit di Besut. Mengikut katanya sudah banyak kali jentera-jentera dan kakitangan Jabatan Kerjaya hendak masuk ke kawasan itu untuk merobohkan struktur-stuktur dan bangunan-bangunan di tempat itu tetapi mereka menemui pelbagai halangan yang pelik-pelik.


Saya pada masa itu tidak tahu sangat perihal Kerajaan Langit ini tetapi kerana desakan Ustadz Mohd Shukri saya bersetuju dengan syarat saya diiringi oleh 7 orang tafiz. Permohonan saya untuk mendapat tafiz tidak menjadi masalah dan dalam beberapa jam sahaja, Mufti Terengganu dapat mengumpul 7 orang tafiz diiringi dengan 3 orang Ustadz iaitu tenaga pengajar mereka. Kami berkumpul selepas waktu asar di sebuah surau di Kuala Terengganu dan saya memberitahu mereka surah-surah yang perlu dibaca semasa di sana dan juga memberi taklimat apa yang mereka harus lakukan apabila tiba di sana nanti. Saya juga “scan” setiap tafiz dan tenaga pengajar yang akan mengiringi saya untuk memastikan tidak ada yang lemah semangat atau bermasalah.


Selepas solat magrib dan selepas makan malam nasi bungkus, kami bertolak ke Besut menaiki bas Jabatan Hal Ehwal Agama Terengganu (JHEAT). Selalunya perjalanan dari Kuala Terengganu ke Besut mengambil masa 2 jam sahaja. Rupa-rupanya Raja iblis iaitu sahabat Ayah Pin telah tahu tentang perancangan kami dan mereka pun membuat persiapan juga untuk menghalang kami tiba di tempat itu.


Kira-kira dalam 50 km dari kawasan itu, terdapat sekatan jalan atau “road block” bukan oleh pihak polis atau JPJ tapi road block oleh kuncu-kuncu jin dan iblis Ayah Pin. Bas yang kami menaiki terpaksa berhenti dan patah balik untuk mencari jalan alternative yang lain. Sekiranya kami tidak menghiraukan sekatan jalan itu, jin-jin itu berupaya untuk menganiayakan kami dengan berlakunya kemalangan-kemalangan yang mereka boleh lakukan. Ada suatu ketika bas yang kami naik diserang oleh jin-jin Ayah Pin dan saya bernasib baik membawa bersama adek-adek tafiz ini yang sungguh bersemangat membaca ayat-ayat Al-Quran dan bersama dengan pertolongan dari Allah swt, menolong saya melawan jin-jin tersebut. Kami terpaksa mengambil jalan yang jauh untuk sampai ke Besut.


Kami sampai di Besut dalam jam 2 pagi. Kami mengambil masa lebih dari 6 jam untuk sampai ke Besut bandingkan dengan perjalanan yang biasa nya makan masa 2 jam untuk sampai ke sana. Bila sampai di kawasan itu, saya terperanjat melihat betapa ramainya polis-polis dari Bukit Aman dan Kuala Terengganu menjaga keselamatan dan membuat pemantauan di kawasan itu. Bila sampai di tempat itu, saya rasa agak pelik melihat cerik besar, pasu besar, bahtera kapal nabi noh dan lain-lain struktur. Walau pun tempat itu tidak ada lampu sebab bekalan elektrik telah lama diputuskan oleh pihak berkuasa, kami disinari oleh cahaya bulan mengambang pada malam itu.


Setelah membuat tinjauan atau “quick survey” di kawasan itu, saya mendapati ada beratus ekor jin dan iblis dalam kawasan itu. Tetapi yang ketara sangat ialah 12 ekor jin yang mewaklili beberapa agama-agama di dalam dunia ini. Jin-jin ini lah yang telah membantu Ayah Pin mendirikan ajaran agama sesat Kerajaan Langit ini.


Saya memilih dewan perhimpunan yang masih tersergam disitu untuk bertempur dengan 12 ekor jin itu. Saya mengarahkan semua tafiz-tafiz yang mengiringi saya untuk masuk ke dalam dewan itu. Untuk pengetahuan semua, ada golongan orang yang cuba membakar dewan perhimpunan itu dua atau tiga hari sebelum itu dan terdapat banyak serpihan-serpihan kaca di lantai dewan itu. Dengan bercahayakan bulan yang mengambang pada malam itu dan lampu suloh dari pihak polis, kami membaca surah-surah Al-Quran. Satu demi satu jin saya bertempur sehingga jubah saya basah kuyup dengan peluh badan. Hampir 3 jam saya bertempur sehingga saya berguling-guling di atas lantai dewan itu.


Dengan keizinan Allah swt dan pertolongan dari Nya, dan dibantu dengan laungan dan bacaan ayat-ayat suci Al-Quran dari adik-adik tafiz yang ada dengan saya pada malam itu, saya dapat mengalahkan kesemua jin-jin Ayah Pin kecuali se-ekor jin yang dapat melarikan diri. Selepas itu saya mengarahkan beratus-ratus jin-jin yang berada di sekitar kawasan itu berpindah atau pergi dari kawasan itu.


Masa itu sudah hampir waktu subuh. Kami semua bersiap sedia untuk berjemaah subuh. Saya menyuruh seorang dari adek tafiz melaungkan azan subuh. Pada pagi itu, pertama kali dalam 25 tahun azan subuh berkumandang di tempat itu. Syukur Alahamdulilah pada Allah swt. Menitis air mata saya bila terdengar azan subuh di kawasan itu dan berakhirlah kekuasaan jin-jin Ayah Pin di tempat itu. Selepas mengerjakan solat, saya sujud bersyukur pada Allah swt kerana memberi saya hidayah dan kekuatan menangani jin-jin tersebut.


Selepas matahari terbit kami semua bersiap sedia untuk pulang ke Kuala Terengganu. Perjalanan balik ke Kuala Terengganu aman tanpa sekatan road block atau apa-apa halangan. Kami diberitahu tepat jam 8 pagi, pihak JKR datang dengan jentera-jenteranya merobokan semua struktur-struktur dan bangunan-bangunan di kawasan itu.


Pada hari Isnin, 2 August 2005 tersebar meluas cerita di dalam setiap akbar di negara ini mengenai kawasan pentadbiran Kerajaan Langit telah dirobohkan dan dimusnahkan. Tetapi apa yang berlaku pada malam sebelum kawasan itu dirobohkan tidak ramai yang tahu cerita sebenarnya sampai lah hari ini saya memilih untuk memberitahu kejadian sebenar yang berlaku. Terima kasih Allah kerana atas pertolongan Mu kami berjaya menumpas ajaran sesat yang sudah lama berleluasa di negara ini. Amin Ya Rabbal Alamin.

Margin Changes for MINIForex and REALForex

We would like to inform you that as of 7 March 2011, margin requirements for locked positions on MINIForex and REALForex trading account types will change.

In accordance with the settled practice in the market, the margin for locked positions will be equal to 25% of the total margin of given orders. 

We recommend filling up your trading balance in advance, or closing at least part of the unprofitable orders to avoid closing your locked positions by stop-out. This is important because you should have enough funds for the maintenance of the margin level above 50% by the time the new margin conditions are introduced.
